Course Summary

The IIE’s Higher Certificate in Hospitality Management equips learners to demonstrate a coherent and encompassing understanding of management principles and how these apply to hospitality operations. 


Students will acquire the skill set to interpret challenges in the various hospitality departments, deliver services efficiently and effectively, solve problems, and exploit opportunities to improve services. 


Students will understand customer segmentation and target markets and have an understanding of the legal requirements that have an impact on the hospitality businesses as well as understand basic accounting principles and their application to a hospitality business.

Course Outcome

  • The purpose of the IIE Higher Certificate in Hospitality Management is to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes necessary to manage and lead hospitality departments and small establishments effectively within the complex and highly competitive hospitality environment.

  • This qualification is aimed at developing applied managerial and supervisory competencies in core hospitality areas ensuring that qualifying learners can translate their learning into practice in a professional context.

  • Learners will be equipped with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to demonstrate the integrated competencies of accountability, ethical behaviour and a future-focused problem-solving approach, within the context of an industry that is continuously facing internal and external challenges.

Admission Requirements

Minimum Admission Requirements:


An appropriate Higher Certificate or relevant equivalent (at least 120 credits, NQF Level 5). 


International Students:


A SAQA NQF Level 5 Evaluation Certification in an appropriate field.  


Senate Discretionary Admission:


Where candidates do not satisfy the formal admission requirements for this qualification, The IIE may consider an admission application in terms of the Credit Accumulation and Transfer, Recognition of Prior Learning and Qualification Completion Policy (IIE010).
